Nissan Leaf passes autonoumous driving test on Japanese highway.

We're not sure how to translate "ghost-riding the whip" in Japanese, but Nissan appears to have mastered the concept. Earlier this week, the Japanese automaker tested a self-driving Nissan Leaf electric vehicle on public roads for the first time and proclaimed the exercise a success in driverless motoring.

Nissan equipped the vehicle with its so-called Autonomous Drive feature and took the car out onto Sagami Expressway in Kanagawa prefecture. The car, the first with Autonomous Drive to receive a license plate in Japan, is programmed to merge, change lanes and maintain a safe distance relative to other vehicles, all without the aid of a driver's controls.

Nissan has joined a growing list of companies that are testing the concept of autonomous driving, which in some circles is seen to potential improve both safety and fuel economy. Most notably, Swedish automaker Volvo last year tested its Sartre road train project in Spain. Volvo used three vehicles equipped with cameras, radar and laser sensors that tailed a truck for about 120 miles going about 53 miles per hour. The cars were about 20 feet apart and were programed to accelerate, brake and turn in the same way as the lead truck, which all worked as planned.

The bike that made riding a bike cool back in the mid 1960s. The Schwinn "Stin Ray" changed everything in bike design and appearance. Check out a recent article here: http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424127887324809804578511363194241052.html

Mike Pethel makes DIY attempt at world's quickest EV in 1970's BMW 3.0 CS. So you think you've seen the quickest-ever battery-powered race car in the world? What about Rhys Millen in his electrified 2013 Hyundai Genesis Coupe setting the Pike's Peak speed record? Or John "Plasma Boy" Wayland in his converted 1972 Datsun 1200, the White Zombie, as he turned heads at the Portland International Raceway? Or even the Tesla Model S, in the production category.

The list keeps growing with a new entrant: racer Mike Pethel, who has built what might be the quickest EV ever in an early 1970's BMW 3.0 CS out of his garage in Venice, CA and will soon be featured on a radio feature from Public Radio's BURN: An Energy Journal and American Public Media's Marketplace. Anchored by long-time public radio journalist and storyteller Alex Chadwick, the segments will look at how individuals, new science ideas, grassroots initiatives and potentially game-changing inventions redefine America's quest for greater energy independence.

Which brings us to Pethel. A color technologist for the film and TV industry by day, Pethel doubles as a racecar enthusiast and obsessive inventor at night. His BURN segment last year covers his attempts to build a high-performance electric car. He was able to pull it off – after installing two electric motors with large lithium ion phosphate batteries capable of generating 800 horsepower, his experimental 3.0 CS can do zero to 60 miles per hour in approximately three seconds – but he also drives the car quietly on city streets to his workplace every day. The inventor took Chadwick on a memorable test drive and they discussed the on-going nature of his quest. Once it airs on the radio, the segment should be available for streaming here.

This is cool and all, but is it the fastest EV racer ever built? EV racing fans want to know.

Further (sometimes, Furthur) was a 1939 International Harvester school bus purchased by author Ken Kesey in 1964 for $1,500 from Andre Hobson in Atherton, California. The bus was stripped down and remodeled inside and out for a psychedelic excursion across the country with Kesey and his Merry Pranksters on board. The bus was named by artist Roy Sebern, who painted the word “Furthur” (with two U's) on the destination placard as a kind of one-word poem and inspiration to keep going whenever the bus broke down.
Beat legend Neal Cassady was the driver of the famous bus on its original trip to New York for the publication of Kesey's new book, Sometimes a Great Notion. The trip was filmed by the Merry Pranksters, and this footage was used for the 2011 documentary film Magic Trip. Other Further trips included an anti-Vietnam war rally in 1966 and Woodstock in 1969.

During the 1960s, the Classic company made a series of 1.24 scale slot cars that rule many hometown hobby tracks. Among the hottest was this Stinger model with articulating rear wing that flipped up when slowing down. Together with orange tires and an outrageous look, the Stinger is now a coveted collectible. Expect to pay $300++ depending on condition and with box. Oh, mine in pretty rough shape after years of use but I'll never git her up!

The 1960 Plymouth Fury had the option of a dashboard record player: the RCA Victor “Highway Hi-Fi”. It could play up to fourteen “45” records consecutively.

To avoid records skipping this set of wheels had to have been a very smooth ride.
