I've always been skeptical of these "universal" wrenches. Anybody ever had success with these, especially when a standard box wrench just wasn't cutting it?

I never used one of those, but my motto is: a tool can be excellent at one thing, or sub-par at a bunch of things. Don't think I'd buy that.
