All our vehicles have a fire extinguisher. The one time I traveled without one, guess what, a fire but fortunately minor!

And if you are feeling like a high roller a Halon Fire Extinguisher (used on race cars and high dollar automobiles) is defiantly worth the extra money ($250ish) they won't destroy your engine bay and don't use the power white chemical that are in the cheaper fire extinguishers....

A fire extinguisher in your car is definitely a good start, but remember to put it somewhere easily accessible! Last thing you want is to be digging head first into the depth of your trunk when the engine is on fire

What about a standard fire extinguisher will destroy your engine bay? Do you mean destroy it mechanically or cosmetically?
