The German car industry was hit hard by World War 1 and whilst both Daimler and Benz went back to producing cars times were tough. A merger between Daimler and Benz would ensure that both companies survived and following a technical co-operation agreement in 1924 the companies formally merged on the 1st July 1926.

Prior to the merger the Mercedes 24/100/140PS was seen as one of the world’s most desirable production cars. Post merger the Mercedes Benz 24/100/140PS as it was then known (or Type 630K) continued to be a market leader that was affordable to the very few. The car was powered by a six cylinder in line 6240 cc engine with an overhead cam shaft and a supercharger (or ”Kompressor”) for which Daimler and subsequently Mercedes Benz became highly regarded.

These cars were built in limited numbers and very few were delivered new to Australia.

We have just consigned this fabulous 1928 Mercedes Benz 630K (Type 24/100/140 PS). The car is partly restored and has been rebodied in the style of a Maharaja ‘Tiger’ car.

This is a matching numbers car, being chassis number 35439 with engine 68606.

According to the factory build sheet the car was delivered new to Melbourne, Australia and presumably as a rolling chassis. The car was known in Brisbane in the 1950′s and it was often seen towing a trailer with an MG TC on the back to motor racing events! Its subsequent history is mostly known.

The car was purchased back in March 2003 and work commenced immediately on the car with the vision to restore it in the style of a Maharaja ‘Tiger’ car. All of the work on the car to date has been completed by Sleeping beauties in Brisbane and the body was built by Mark Nugent in Dubbo. Both companies are renowned for exhibiting high quality restored cars at Pebble Beach.

The car is being sold on behalf of a deceased estate which is why the car was never completed.

This is a unique opportunity to purchase this world market car in Australia and finish it to your own specifications.

Price on application.

Who would have thought that a cheap econo car could be turned into a racing champion? Well, that is what happened when Carlo Abarth got a hold of the tiny Fiat 600. With its finely tuned engine and Zagato bodywork it was ready to run with the big boys. Real Abarth 750s are rare and command a premium today so we were surprised when P. Trout sent us a link to this one on LA’s craigslist.
