Amelia Island Concours 2014 – Report and Photos from Sports Car Digest.

The Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance 2014 was held Sunday, March 9th on the 10th and 18th fairways of the Golf Club of Amelia Island adjacent to the Ritz-Carlton in Amelia Island, Florida. The event attracted an estimated crowd in excess of 25,000 and more than 300 vehicles on display.
Honorary Chairman Jochen Mass kicked off the 19th annual Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance by driving onto the field in one of his former race cars. A selection of Jochen’s racer cars were among the highlights of the Cars of Jochen Mass class, from the 1989 Le Mans-winning Sauber-Mercedes C9 Silver Arrows to the 1976 McLaren M23 Formula 1.
In addition to the race cars of Jochen Mass, the 2014 Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance also celebrated the 100th anniversary of Maserati race and street cars, the 50th anniversary of McLaren, BMW 3.0 and 3.5 CSL ‘Batmobiles’, Cars of Zagato Design and Chrysler Concept Cars. Other classes ranged from Beach Cars, Bugatti, solid-axle Corvettes, Ferrari Production and Race, Offenhauser Power, Porsche race cars from 904 to 962, Packard Concepts and Underslung.
The BMW CSL display was headlined by the ‘Batmobile’ race car painted by Alexander Calder. The 3.0-liter CSL was an alliance of racer and art auctioneer Herve Poulain and American sculptor Calder mixed with the foresight of BMW Motorsport chief Jochen Neerpasch. Poulain and Sam Posey raced the ‘Art Car’ at the 1975 24 Hours of Le Mans, qualifying first in class and 11th overall in a 55-car field.
Off the show field, attendees enjoyed seminars on the Great Offy Drivers and the Merchants of Speed. Indy 500 Winner Johnny Rutherford moderated the Great Offy Drivers Seminar that included Parnelli Jones, Al Unser, Bobby Unser and David Hobbs, while Merchants of Speed featured Ray Evernham, John Mecom, Bobby Rahal, Alwin Springer and Bob Tullius discussing the triumphs, trials and tribulations of owning a successful racing team.
Plans for the 2015 Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance are already underway and the 20th annual event is scheduled to be held on March 13-15.
