I don't know if this was ever a big thing.... but according to this mid-60's advert you could save money by buying abroad.

After traveling with your new Euro car in Europe this service offers to ship it back to the US following your trip. Sounds awesome.

1973 Advert for a German made Zündapp motor bike.

"The first Zündapp motorcycle was the model Z22 in 1921. This was the Motorrad für Jedermann ("motorcycle for everyone"), a simple, reliable design that was produced in large series. Zündapp's history of heavy motorcycles began in 1933 with the K-series. The "K" refers to the type of drivetrain that these models used, 'Kardanantrieb' meaning enclosed driveshaft with two universal joints."

There is an automotive graveyard is filled with attempts to capture women buyers.

Quoted from Jalopnik user ATX211 -- This is how many a marketing board meeting might have gone down:

-"How do we market to women?"

- "Talk down to them."

"No that doesn't work. Tried it."

- "Make it pink?"

"Bingo"

- "Chicks dig everything pink. Probably make them want to drive."

"Don't call them chicks. Broads hate being called chicks."

"At launch in 1961 the E-Type Jaguar cost $5,595 for the Roadster or "OTS" (Open two-seater) and $5,895 for the Coupe or "FHC" (Fixed head coupe) this included standard wire wheels. Adjusted for inflation in 2011 dollars, the E-type would cost about $41,000 for the roadster and $43,000 for the coupe."

A milestone in advertising catered to women, is this 1923 ad for the Jordan Playboy, art by Fred Cole, from the Saturday Evening Post, June 1923.

"Somewhere West of Laramie there’s a broncho-busting, setter-roping girl who knows what I’m talking about. She can tell what a sassy pony, that’s a cross between greased lightning and the place where it hits, can do with eleven hundred pounds of steel and action when he’s going high, wide and handsome. The truth is- The Jordan Playboy was built for her."

"The advertising firm of Doyle Dane Bernbach was responsible for one of Volkswagen of America’s most memorable advertising campaigns. Starting in the late 1950s and continuing at least through the mid-1970s, they were very unique and clever, so much so that VW has brought this advertising style back several times."

The Fiat 124 was also produced under license in Turkey, sold under the name "Murat 124". Production total 134,867 between the years of 1971-94.

A NYC Packard advertisement In 1904. "The first year that Longacre Square tried on its new name Times Square, it was still populated with horse-related services like carriage shops and stables. But it seems the horse-less carriages were represented too. The Packard Motor Car dealership, had its address at 1540 Broadway.

The Ohio-based car company would spread out several dealerships throughout the New York area, but made a go of it at this location from 1904-1907. As the fate of Times Square as New York's entertainment focal point had not yet been solidified, it probably seemed natural to sell cars here. By 1907, they moved to the less chaotic corner of Broadway and 61st Street.
Today, the Bertelsmann Building consumes that entire block" Source: http://theboweryboys.blogspot.com/2010/12/trip-to-times-square-1904-packard-motor.html
