As people welcome Jorge Mario Bergoglio as the 266th pontiff of the Roman Catholic Church, editors at Autoweek.com are speculating on what type of vehicle Pope Francis will use to get around. As a cardinal in Buenos Aires, Bergoglio was known for eschewing a car and driver and taking public transportation, but that might not work in Vatican City and elsewhere the new pope travels. His predecessor, Pope Benedict XVI, is seen at left, during a 2007 visit to São Paulo, Brazil in what has become the traditional ‘popemobile,’ made by Mercedes-Benz.

Pope Francis has shunned Pope Benedict's BMWs and Mercedes cars for a used 1984 Renault that he plans to drive himself. The car is a donation from the Rev. Renzo Zocco, who used it to serve the poor in Verona.

Pope Francis emerges from a Vatican building to check out his new used ride. The 25-year-old Renault has a new 800 cc. 30-horse power engine.
