1934 Rolls Royce Phantom II "Limousine De Ville" by Gurney Nutting - ex/Dame Gracie Fields & Duke of Buccleuch & Queensbury

Chassis Number: 55TA
Engine Number: VT55 - 7.6 liter

Records show that that Phantom II chassis number 55TA was ordered by Gracie Fields through London Rolls Royce dealer H.R. Owen on October 2nd, 1934. The chassis was dispatched to coach builder Gurney Nutting on January 10th, 1935, and it took approximately 3 months before the car was complete and ready for delivery. The car's history has been confirmed through documents supplied by the Rolls Royce archive (they also supplied the original build specification & test sheets, and a factory photo of this car when new).

Dame Gracie Fields was a legendary British actress/singer/comedienne. On February 15th, 1938, she was honored with the "Commander of the Order of the British Empire" medal from King George VI.

Gracie only kept the car for one year, after which it was sold to "His Grace the Duke of Buccleuch and Queensbury" (the largest private landowner in Europe - 280,000 acres). The car was owned by the Duke's family from 1936 - 1948 and kept at Drumlanrig Castle in Scotland. The Duke's uncle had been the Chairman of Rolls Royce (he commissioned the original "Spirit of Ecstasy"mascot). His cousin was Lord Montagu of Beaulieu who founded the National Motor Museum at his family estate in Hampshire.

The Duke sold the car in 1948 to a Rolls Royce hire service at 21 Cromwell Mews, Kensington, where it was mainly used for weddings and other special occasions. It was eventually exported to the US (circa 1970) and has been here ever since according to the history on file. A well-known classic car collector (and lifetime member of the Rolls Royce Owners Club) named Gordon Dysart bought the car and embarked on a restoration to bring the car back to its fomer glory. At the time, Gracie Fields ran a small hotel and restaurant on Capri catering to celebrities, and Mr. Dysart actually travelled to the island to visit her and ask for information on the car. She supplied him further details on original colors and materials to help add authenticity to the restoration.

A complete frame-off concours restoration was performed, and this "Full Classic" car earned both CCCA & AACA Senior First Place awards. After the restoration, the car was shown numerous times and was always maintained and properly stored. Although the restoration was performed some time ago, the car is still in quite beautiful condition. It almost appears to be a well-kept original rather than a restored car. Includes the fitted tool set (under the chauffeur's seat).

A very impressive car with a history described by several specialists as "superb". It is suitable for a quality collection, museum, or would make a great vintage tour car.

Photos and further information available by email. Please respond with your phone number and direct email, and I will respond immediately.

$175,000 / partial trades considered.

NOTE: Yes, I realize that a car of this caliber should have been consigned to a live auction such as Gooding, RM, or Rick Cole. I'm not really an "auction guy" and would prefer a face to face direct transaction with the buyer if possible. The car is in my garage and available for inspection any time. Thanks for taking the time to read this ad.

Brazil has always been an alternate reality for VWs, with their long-closed borders forcing all kinds of interesting mutations and developments of the old air-cooled VW line. Without foreign sports cars to import, VW Brasil made their own: the SP2. Parked, it was the fastest car you've ever seen.

This lovely, citrusy 1972 Volkswagen Type III Fastback is named Edna.
The SP2 was built on the Type III platform, and used the same flat-four, 1700cc "pancake" engine. Which made all of 75HP. Which gave the SP2 the Portuguese nickname "Sem Potência," which in English means "without power."

Roy Spencer sent along this fantastic story and accompanying image from 1964 depicting his father's Ferrari GTO. Read on...

Maybe a follow-up to the recent 250GTO sale of $52m would be interesting for your readers. I attach an advertisement for my father's 1963 250GTO series 1 #4219. He offered the car for sale in 1964 to make room for the quicker (and rarer with only 3 editions built) 1964 series 2 GTO. The $14k asking price is a stark contrast to values today. It was sold to a very cool guy, George Dyer, who sold the car in 1993 for $3.7m after turning down $10m in 1989!

I also attach an image of my Father, Bev Spencer, standing next to the GTO on the trailer behind his tow vehicle of choice, a new Buick Riviera. I doubt many GTOs ever arrived at a track led by a Buick Riviera. The location is just behind the Del Monte Lodge in Pebble Beach circa spring 1964. The car was painted in the NART (North American Racing Team) colors as were all Factory Ferraris at that time as Enzo Ferrari was feuding with Europe's racing governing body, the FIA and entered his cars under the NART banner and painted them all the white w/blue stripes, even the F1 cars.

Last year, a new first class event premiered in England. Christened the Windsor Castle Concours of Elegance, this year’s meeting was renamed for the Court of St. James and held at the St. James’ Palace in central London. Sixty of the rarest and most beautiful motorcars in the world were invited and on display. They ranged from the earliest days of motoring, as represented by a 1907 Darracq 18 horsepower Double-Phaeton up to and including some of the most exquisite post-war machinery in existence.

Such a wide variety of exotic vehicles are rarely seen in such a splendid setting, and we think Pavel Novitski’s images are the next best thing to actually being there. So enjoy the show from the comfort of your own home and visit Pavel Novitski Automotive Photography. You can also see more of his earlier work elsewhere here on The Old Motor and learn more about the St. James’ Concours of Elegance here. On view here is a photo essay of only some of the pre-1930 cars that attended. Look for more coverage from us soon.

This 1971 Triumph 13/60 Estate (née Herald) was imported from UK by previous owner, who built it to Mark II Vitesse spec — meaning six-cylinder GT6 motor, overdrive gearbox, and less-likely-to-kill-you rear suspension. The car is fully restored, and it won the Vintage Triumph Register’s Best in Show in 2007. The current seller bought it the following year and has invested several thousands more sorting the brakes, electrics, gauges, suspension, rebuilding seats to make it a roadworthy car instead of just for show. This is the only one we have ever come across in North America, and the updated specs make it even more interesting. It is available in Nyack, New York for $19,500. Citroën DS 19 Prototype: The Goddess has landed. It’s the beginning of October, 1955; the Citroën DS is about to be revealed to the world, and subsequently revered for both its technological and aesthetic advances. We’ve unearthed images of ‘The Goddess’ on her maiden journey, just days before the momentous premiere.
advertisement

The debut of the DS ushers in a new era for the French manufacturer. After 23 years in service, the weary Traction Avant is finally being replaced, and visitors to the Paris show are stunned by how far its successor moves the game on. Soon to float (almost literally) along the boulevards of the world, the streamlined body appears to have been hauled back from the future by designer Flaminio Bertoni, and the technology it boasts is no less of a revelation.

Hydropneumatic suspension makes its first appearance on a production car, oscillating automatically to adapt to road conditions – Mercedes and Rolls-Royce are to license the pioneering technology soon afterwards. Meanwhile, disc brakes and a dual-circuit braking system provide anchorage; a semi-automatic transmission takes power to the front wheels. Interestingly, the horn has two volume settings: city and highway. In 1957, philosopher Roland Barthes remarks that the DS has "obviously fallen from the sky."

The photographs seen here were taken by French photographer Maurice Jarnoux, for Paris Match, not a week before the show. They show a prototype DS 19 undergoing final evaluation in a screened-off section of the Citroën factory; the bird's-eye image perfectly emphasises the Goddess’s teardrop shape. In the same shot, Jarnoux also captures the four-cylinder engine liberated from the obscuring bonnet, while the black, glassfibre-reinforced roof prescribed by co-designer André Lefèbvre reflects the daylight it was about to see fully for the first time.

During the maiden voyage, the prototype stuns soldiers smoking outside their nearby Versailles barracks as it sweeps through rain-slicked bends at 60mph. They're not to know that the driver has the assurance of the revolutionary suspension and other futuristic technologies, while the curved windscreen is providing him with ample vision. The single-spoke steering wheel has also been designed with his welfare in mind, and will collapse should the worst occur. Some later even credit the Goddess for famously saving the life of Charles de Gaulle during an assassination attempt…

President de Gaulle wasn’t the only satisfied customer; the DS was built in numerous variations for 20 years, and remained largely unchanged throughout. The interior was comfortable and spacious, and had room for more than a dozen suitcases – as demonstrated by Gina Lollobrigida.

Though it’s as pretty today as it would have been on that wet autumn day all those years ago, its visual appeal had begun to wane by the 1970s, despite still achieving strong sales. It was joined by the SM before being phased out completely some years later, but such was its impact that it has become one of the archetypal classic cars – its characterful silhouette being the visual equivalent of a ‘household name’.

Peter Mullin cracks open the door of a 1935 Voisin Type C25 Aerodyne at the back of the auto museum bearing his name. He points out the intricate details of a vibrant Art Deco interior, restored to its original luster.

A small ashtray hangs on the inside of each door — made from etched Lalique crystal.

Light streams into the car through three small glass windows in the fully retractable roof. A bold black and white patterned fabric covers the doors, seats and roof, sourced from the same French textile mill that wove the original fabric more than seven decades ago.

"You can see why this one is kind of the favorite," Mullin says of the C25 with a smile.

Once relegated to the scrap heap of automotive history, the Voisin brand has undergone a renaissance within the classic car world. The cars, which cost as much as a Bugatti in the 1920s and 30s, are worth millions of dollars today. They were the creation of Gabriel Voisin, a colorful yet fastidious French architect and engineer who made a fortune selling airplanes during World War I.

Mullin's navy blue and grey C25 won Best of Show at the 2011 Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance, arguably the most prestigious prize in the classic car world. Another Voisin, a 1934 C15 ETS Saliot-bodied Roadster, won Best of Show in 2002.

When Pebble Beach Concours hosted Voisin as the featured marque in 2006, it provoked a frenzied reaction among collectors.

"It was like finding the lost Rembrandts," said Richard Adatto, an expert in classic French cars and a member of the classic car show's selection committee.

Prior to 2006, he said, no Voisin had sold for more than $1 million. After that, prices nearly doubled. Peter Mullin's C25 could be worth as much as $5 million today, said David Gooding, president and founder of the Gooding & Co. auction company. Most experts estimate there are 250 to 300 known Voisin automobiles, though they are starting to turn up as barn finds throughout Europe.

Fortunately for Mullin, he got into the brand early.

"I fell in love with the Art Deco nature of Voisin a number of years ago," Mullin said. "One by one, they found their way into the collection."

In addition to his prize-winner, Mullin owns 15 other exceptionally rare and valuable Voisin models on display at the Mullin Automotive Museum in Oxnard until the end of April. The museum is also home to dozens of gleaming prewar cars from other French marques like Bugatti, Delahaye and the odd Talbot-Lago.

Mullin, the man, owns nearly everything in the building. But the Voisin cars have become his favorite, not just for their intricate details, but because they embody the values of the man behind their nameplate.

Gabriel Voisin was a colorful figure who made a name for himself in the early 1900s as an aviation pioneer. Despite being in their mid-20s, Voisin and his younger brother Charles started the world's first aircraft company. Their early planes set several European flight records.

Gabriel Voisin kept the company open after his brother was killed in a 1912 car crash, and sold several thousand fighter planes to the French military and its allies for use in World War I.

After the war ended, a glut of planes and little demand for new ones pushed Voisin to build a machine with a more benevolent purpose. He spent roughly the next 20 years building some of the most elaborate and expensive cars of the era. The rigors of aviation engineering and attention to detail carried into Voisin's forward-thinking automobiles.

"Everything was designed all the way out," Adatto said. "Even the taillights were handmade."

Many of Voisin's cars have struts connecting the front wheel fender to the grille — like the wing struts common on aircraft from the era. The cars were largely built from lightweight materials such as aluminum or magnesium. Most cars from that time — and even today — were built from heavier steel.

Inside, the dashboard of many Voisin vehicles had gauges to show oil pressure and temperature in an era when most cars didn't even have a fuel gauge, Adatto said. A complex engine design used sleeve valves rather than the standard overhead poppet valves found on engines today.

As the Saab story is facing some dark times, we thought it was a good time to look back at where this story began. In 1947, the Swedish aircraft manufacturer Saab revealed a prototype that would bring their manufacturing know-how out of the skies and onto the roads of Europe. This prototype was 1946 Saab 92001 Ursaab, a car with such unusual, aircraft-inspired styling that it appeared like nothing else on the road.

The 1946 Saab 92001 Ursaab was a car built by 16 aircraft engineers — only two of them having drivers licenses — with none of them having any automotive experience. The result, however, was a surprising success. In secret testing, the Saab team drove this car nearly 330,000 miles on back roads in Sweden both late at night and early in the morning. This vehicle became the inspiration for the Saab 92, which began production in the late 1940s, as well as many of the future Saab models. The Saab 92001 was the “ursaab”, or the “Original Saab”, a car that in itself explains the company slogan “born from jets”.

The 1946 Saab 92001 Ursaab now rests in the Saab Museum in Trollhättan, Sweden. 54 years later, the fate of Saab is being decided by its owner, GM, and the potential suitors who wish to take over this brand and its unusual legacy.
