Watch Wes Anderson’s Charming 8 min Short Film: "Castello Cavalcanti" Starring Jason Schwartzman.

Anderson transports us to Castello Cavalcanti in the suitably mid-century year of 1955. The quiet evening scene, exuding that richly Italian feeling falling somewhere between idyll and indolence, splinters apart when a race car crashes into the center of town. Out of the wreck emerges the unscathed but enraged driver — evidently, the steering wheel got screwed on backward — the Italian-American Cavalcanti realizes he may have driven not only straight into his own ancestral village, but into the company of his ancestors themselves. These charming and vividly colorful seven Andersonian minutes come brought to you by Prada."

Shake'n bacon grew at Texas Motor Speedway. Only in America baby!

Many people tend to have hankerings for beer, milkshakes or bacon -- or for that matter all three -- and now thanks to Levy Restaurants and Texas Motor Speedway those cravings can be satisfied all at once.

Levy Restaurants Executive Chef Joel Pena has created the Shake 'n Bacon Brew beer milkshake, a delectable, bacon-infused, alcoholic novelty concoction that will debut Oct. 31-Nov. 3 during the AAA Texas 500 NASCAR tripleheader race weekend at Texas Motor Speedway.

The Shake 'n Bacon Brew utilizes local Texas products in its key ingredients with the beverage featuring a signature craft beer from Rahr & Sons Brewing Co. of Fort Worth and ever-popular Blue Bell Ice Cream, a company that was founded in 1907 in Brenham, Texas.

The frothy beverage consists of six ounces of Rahr & Sons Ugly Pug Black Lager, six ounces of Blue Bell homemade vanilla ice cream, two ounces of bacon-infused maple syrup that is mixed in a blender for a unique milkshake for adults 21 and over. The Shake 'n Bacon Brew will be poured into a 16-ounce plastic souvenir cup featuring the brew's pig mascot and then topped off with three ounces of whipped cream and bacon crumbles.

Levy Restaurants also will produce a "Shirley Temple" version for those fans under 21 that have a love for bacon and milkshakes. The Shake 'n Bacon Brewless will substitute root beer for the Rahr & Sons beer and also come in the 16-ounce souvenir cup.

Shake 'n Bacon Brew and Shake 'n Bacon Brewless will sell for $10 each during race week and be available at the "Pig Rig" located on the main concourse between Gates 3 and 4. The drinks also will be available in The Speedway Club for Texas Motor Speedway's club members.

Shake 'n Bacon Brew and Brewless are the third and fourth bacon-infused concession items that Chef Pena has produced, joining Texas Motor Speedway's growing family of novelty concession items that debuted during April's NASCAR race weekend.

The most popular item of the group was the "Hawg Heaven" bacon cotton candy, which was joined by the Bacon Martini, Smokin' Hubcaps (brisket on a glazed donut), mac 'n cheese hot dog and chocolate-covered Pit Stop Popcorn. All of these items will be available once again for the AAA Texas 500 race weekend.

The only opportunity to taste these unique concession items is to attend the AAA Texas 500 race week set for Oct. 31-Nov. 3 at Texas Motor Speedway. For ticket information, please visit www.texasmotorspeedway.com or call the Texas Motor Speedway Ticket Office at (817) 215-8500

Witness for yourself the infamous clash between John Cleland and Steve Soper at the final round of the 1992 BTC Championship - including the exciting few laps preceding the incident!

The British Touring Car Championship has pitted high-street cars and household-name drivers against each other for over 50 years. And ever since those early years in the late 1950s, the emphasis has always been on door-banging, paint-trading and fender-bending.

Spectators flocked to all the major circuits of the UK – Silverstone, Brands Hatch, Donington and Oulton Park – to witness four-door fights between a range of modified versions of saloon cars they’d driven to the track that morning.

During the first three decades – the 60s, 70s and 80s – great champions were crowned, and hum-drum cars took on faster machines in a tyre-shredding class war that raged for lap after lap, weekend after weekend, season after season.

The BTCC’s fan popularity rocketed manufacturers flocked to take part – on that age-old, water-tight marketing philosophy of ‘win on Sunday, sell on Monday’ – and drivers from a range of disciplines continued to hold the series in high regard. Witness Formula 1 world champions Jack Brabham, Graham Hill and Jim Clark adding wins to their bulging CVs during the 1960s.

By the end of the 1980s, the BTCC had become a televisual phenomenon, but its class system – that allowed for a fourth-division 1600cc, front-wheel-drive Toyota Corolla to score as many points for a class win as the race-winning, homologation-special, turbo-whistling Ford Sierra RS500s – confused the audience.

As the BTCC entered what would become its best-ever decade, change came in the form of a one-class, easy-to-follow, winner-takes-all series for 1991. And it more than delivered. Six drivers won races for three different marques, with Will Hoy lifting the title in his BMW M3. Racegoers could identify with what they were watching and battles raged up and down the field.

But it was the second season of the new-look BTCC – and in particular the final race of the year at Silverstone – that, 20 years on, remains one of the most memorable in championship history.

The 15-lap finale, in which reigning champion Hoy (now in a Toyota Carina), BMW-mounted Tim Harvey and Vauxhall linchpin John Cleland were all still in with a chance of lifting the ’92 title, was watched by millions on terrestrial, Sunday-afternoon TV with pants-on-fire commentary from the irrepressible Murray Walker.

The early running was made by the Vauxhalls of David Leslie and Jeff Allam, with veteran four-time champ Andy Rouse’s Toyota the meat in a Cavalier sandwich. Title protagonists Hoy, Harvey and Cleland were running nose to tail in fourth, fifth and sixth, which would have given the title to Cleland. But the otherwise wily Scot hadn’t reckoned on title nemesis Harvey’s BMW team-mate Steve Soper. On the penultimate lap, Cleland and Soper were side-by-side into the complex at the Brooklands left-hander, the Vauxhall man up on two wheels as he fought to fend off Soper. With the inside line for the next right-hander at Luffield, Soper launched the 318is up the inside and speared straight into Cleland.

The two veterans were out on the spot, with Harvey safely up the road – having earlier dispensed with Hoy – and en route to the title with fourth place behind Rouse, Allam and Leslie.

It was classic touring-car argy-bargy with Cleland and Soper predictably seeing things entirely differently.

“I didn’t leave any room, but he made some and pushed his way in,” offered Soper.

“He just came straight in, he never braked,” countered Cleland. “If he can get away with that in Germany, he can piss off back there.”

The post-race recriminations continued for hours – days, even – with Cleland setting the tone for two decades’ worth of textbook post-race banter between rivals: “I think he made a desperate move, which just didn’t work out. What am I supposed to do, just say, ‘Well done, old boy, you’ve just pushed me out of the way’?”

Now that Lewis Hamilton has moved on to AMG Mercedes for the 2013 Formula One season, his former seat at McLaren Mercedes is being filled by Mexican driver Sergio Perez.

One of the perks of being a driver for McLaren is that you get to test the company’s wares before anyone else does. For Perez, this includes seat time in McLaren’s latest supercar, the plug-in hybrid P1.

When the P1 begins shipping to the 375 customers lucky enough to get one, it will come with a combined power output of 903 horsepower and 663 pound-feet of torque. That’s enough to deliver a 217 mph top speed (electronically limited), as well as a 0-60 mph time below 3.0 seconds.

Perez calls the P1 the closest thing to a Formula One car that he’s ever driven, and says the car’s cornering capabilities are “incredible.” As Perez explains it, it’s clear that the P1 was developed by a company with strong ties to Formula One racing.

The drive took place at Dunsfold Aerodrome, which is best known to motorsports fans as the home of the Top Gear test track. McLaren’s Ron Dennis has already claimed a lap of Dunsfold 10 seconds quicker than the current record (presumably the one just set by the Pagani Huayra), but we’ve seen no evidence of this.

It’s logical to assume that Perez would be faster around Dunsfold that Dennis, but there are no lap times referenced in the video (much to our disappointment). If the P1 is truly as fast as McLaren says it is, then why not let your newest Formula One star prove it on film?

In fact, we’d love to see a showdown at Dunsfold between Sergio Perez in the McLaren P1 and Fernando Alonso in the LaFerrari. It would finally put an end to the question of which hybrid hypercar is the world’s fastest.

Simon Kidston tames the Aston Martin V8 Vantage 6.3. Collectors get excited about magic numbers: 36 GTOs, 29 alloy Gullwings, 19 DB4GT Zagatos…we all know and revere them. Talking of Astons, there’s only one classic V8 Vantage which sports these two magic numbers on its derrière, and this is it.

Meet the ‘6.3’ engined bruiser which the mad boffins at Aston Martin Works Service have sprinkled their magic upon, and watch- or better still listen- as the surrounding mountains reverberate when a young Italian racer is let loose in it. Trimmed with as much wood and leather as a luxury hotel, and with the same aerodynamics, it’s a throwback to another era and could only be British. We doubt that even Daniel Craig in a new Vanquish would see which way our undercover Italian driver disappeared with it, but the bar of Gstaad’s famed Palace Hotel is probably a good place to look…Cheers!

The source of this footage, John McClure, was a member of the San Diego Jr. Chamber of Commerce and sports car fan and driver. His position with the Chamber put him in a position to combine his passions as part of the team that developed the Torrey Pines Race Course. Thankfully, John also carried a camera around with him for races up and down the West Coast.
This footage is from the August 1956 running of the Paramount Ranch Road Races. The property is now most famous as the location for many Westerns shot by Paramount in the mid 20th Century. For sportscar fans, though, Paramount Ranch will always be remembered as one of the most dangerous and challenging racecourses in Southern California. This race shows many of the different race groups from the weekend, including such drivers as Richie Ginther, Lance Reventlow, and Jack McAfee in Porsche Spyders, Lotus 11s, Ferrari Monzas, and some well-known West Coast specials.
