Realizing that its been quite a while since I posted anything new, I’ve finally let my conscience get the best of me and decided to share some photos from a recent shoot. About a year ago, I met the official photographer Hummer’s off-road racing team, John Pappenfort. John’s a great photographer and was nice enough to get me in as the second team photographer for the recent “Vegas to Reno” race put on by Best in the Desert Racing Association.
It was a great couple days! Using radio and GPS, we chased the race trucks for 12+ hours, setting up on the track and shooting the whole time. At night I set up strobes and experimented with the artificial light in the pits with good results.
By the end of it, my cameras were pure white with dust (no kidding). The race ended with three out the four Hummers finished first in their class with over 200 vehicles in the race.

Late for the Sky is the third album by American singer/songwriter Jackson Browne, released in 1974. The car appears to be an early 50's Chevrolet...anyone know more?

Car Wheels on a Gravel Road was Lucinda Williams’ fifth album and her first to go gold, earning her a Grammy for Best Contemporary Folk Album. In 2003, Rolling Stone ranked it number 304 on its list of the 500 Best Albums of All Time.
And just in case you were in need of any additional validation for liking this album so much, critic Robert Christgau wrote, “This is where she establishes herself as the most accomplished record-maker of the age. A+.”
This live performance of the album’s title song was recorded at the 2009 Cambridge Folk Festival, where the addition of a mandolin on top adds another dimension to the wistful restlessness of the lyrics.

A word of advice: Go easy on the caffeine at Canepa Cars & Coffee. There’s already enough stimulants of the automotive kind when Bruce Canepa hosts the monthly open house at his automotive wonderland. —Story and photos by Rick Voegelin.
Canepa and his staff open the doors to his eponymous Canepa complex in Scotts Valley, California on the second Saturday of every month from April through October. There are no barred doors, no off-limits signs, and no burly security guards admonishing visitors to stay behind the velvet ropes. Enthusiasts are welcome to wander through the glistening showroom, the racing and restoration shops, and the superb motorsports museum. In return, the guests treat the hardware with reverence and the place abounds with good vibes.
This laid-back approach attracts the right crowd, and no crowding (as our British friends would say). The parking lot in front of Canepa’s becomes a freestyle auto show on designated Saturdays. Eclectic is the theme; you’re likely to find a ’56 Chevy sedan in black suede parked alongside a bleeding-red Ferrari Modena.
The Canepa building formerly housed hard-drive manufacturer Seagate. Seven years ago, Bruce was in the right place at the right time and scored the real estate deal of the century, re-purposing the 70,000 square feet to create a stunning environment for high-end automobiles. Think Ultimate Garage raised to an exponential power.
Situated on the central California coast near the newly minted millionaires of Silicon Valley and the Old Money of Carmel and Monterey, the Canepa group of companies attracts an affluent clientele. At any given time, there are more than 100 significant automobiles in residence, and the staff includes former Formula 1, Indy, and Trans-Am mechanics who bring decades of experience, specialized skills, and the racing spirit to work every day.
Canepa will accommodate the pilgrims heading to the Monterey Peninsula for Car Week by opening the doors on August 10-20, kicking off with the next Cars & Coffee klatch on August 10. For directions and details, check out www.canepa.com. And if you can’t make it in person, join us for a virtual tour here on Mac’s Motor City Garage. Take the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG E-Cell, stretch it and take off the wheels then make it float and you've basically got the just-unveiled Cigarette AMG Electric Drive Concept. Powered by an all-electric powertrain that offers 2,200 horsepower and 2,213 pound-feet of torque (and uses "numerous components" taken from the not-quite-as-yellow SLS AMG Coupé Electric Drive), the sleek concept is being called the "world's most powerful electric drive powerboat." What that means is a top speed of over 100 miles per hour from four 60-kWh lithium-ion batteries and two banks of six liquid-cooled, permanent-magnet synchronous electric motors. And the 240 kWh of total energy should provide plenty of juice out on the water.

On the first hole of the day at Louisiana Mudfest, Brian Briggs (TheMudbogger79) showers down on that skinny. Unfortunately there was another truck stuck in the path of his roost. While trying to move out of the way, the entire 4-link setup completely cratered when the driver spooled up and dumped the clutch. The aftermath wasn't pretty. Too bad it was the first day!

Palm Springs Road Race March 1955. The source of this footage, John McClure, was a member of the San Diego Jr. Chamber of Commerce and sports car fan and driver. His position with the Chamber put him in a position to combine his passions as part of the team that developed the Torrey Pines Race Course. Thankfully, John also carried a camera around with him for races up and down the West Coast.
This footage is from the March, 1955 running of the Palm Springs Road Races. This race is particularly interesting for pop culture fans as James Dean brought home 2nd place in his Porsche Speedster for the under 1500cc class—this was mere months before purchasing the Spyder he would die in. Sadly, while there are a few very fleeting shots of Dean's white Speedster here (bearing number 23 for this race), there isn't a clear shot of the man behind the wheel.
The rather grisly rollover accident of Ray Sinatra's Darrin resulted in nothing more serious than a dislocated shoulder.
Ultimately in the main event, Jack McAfee took top honors in his Ferrari 375 MM (#211) after a long battle with Bill Pollack in the Baldwin Special Mk II Mercury (#20).

This video was made 3 years ago, when I was just starting out and putting stuff together for fun. This is NOT my footage in any way, just a fun compilation of crash videos. If you don't like the music (which I no longer have a taste for), you may mute the video and listen to your own music. If you prefer videos with just the monster truck sounds, I suggest you check out my new project MonsterTruckManiaTV (see link and info below). Some people do like music-videos though, so if that's your thing then this is for you. My taste in music has since changed (die-hard power metal and thrash metal fan now), and I'm doing different types of videos.

When legendary Iron Maiden drummer Nicko McBrain put in an order for a new 550-horsepower Jaguar XKR-S – Jaguar’s highest performance production vehicle ever - Jaguar’s design team’s part time rock n’ roller, Wayne Burgess, was thrilled. He contacted McBrain and offered his services to help create the ultimate rock star’s ride, a one-off XKR-S. On Friday, November 9, Nicko, a resident of Florida, took delivery of a bespoke Jaguar XKR-S. Nicko explains what went into his dream machine.
How Did the Project Come About?
Since I was a kid, I’ve always loved Jags with a passion. I remember my father taking me to see the big ol’ Mark 10 when it came out in 1961. That was his favorite car, and since then, I’ve always preferred Jaguar sedans rather than sports cars. In fact, I still have my Series III that I bought in 1986 along with my ’89 Series III that I keep in Florida and use as my daily driver. I bought my wife an XK in 2009, and when she finally let me drive it, I absolutely loved it; so when the XKR-S came out, that was it, I decided I had to have one.
When Did You First Get to Drive the XKR-S?
Jaguar invited me to the Gaydon test track in the UK to do a few laps, and really, that’s how my car came about. They drove me to the track in a new Range Rover Evoque with a terrific black and red leather interior. When we pulled up alongside this French Racing Blue XKR-S, the door was open. When I opened my door to the Range Rover Evoque, I said, “This is the interior I want in my car.”
How Did You Go About Personalizing Your Dream Interior?
The Jaguar team initially thought I was doing the rock star bit of demanding the complete Range Rover Evoque interior installed into an XKR-S. Really, I just wanted the red and black color scheme since the original Iron Maiden name was red on a black background. Then the team said, “If we do that, why don’t we Maiden-ize the whole car?” I went over and saw my mate Wayne Burgess and his team in the Jaguar design department at Whitley and the brainstorming started there. Jaguar has an in-house team, the Engineered To Order (ETO) Division, that was interested in helping us out.
ETO is responsible for extending the Jaguar and Land Rover brands with a series of Special Edition models, such as the Jaguar XJL Ultimate, as well as a range of options allowing owners to more uniquely tailor their cars. My car is truly one of a kind and I had a lot of fun working with the team to make this dream car a reality.
What Features Did You Decide On?
The first major feature we worked on was the paint; I chose a new metallic version of French Racing Blue. Jaguar calls it Ultra Blue and it’s not currently available on the market, but they agreed to let me use it for my car. I live in Florida and when the sun hits the paint, it just explodes; the color is truly amazing.
Next, we wanted to really customize the car so where it says Supercharged on the carbon fiber hood louvers, we’ve used the famous Iron Maiden Metal Lord font. We used the same script for the door tread plates, which now read Nicko McBrain XKR-S. In the piano black veneer above the glove box we’ve added Made In Aluminum, get it?
Tell Us About the Unique Growler on Your XKR-S.
Eddie is the band’s mascot and if you squint your eyes, he looks a lot like a Jaguar growler. So, we created a hybrid version that the team hand-stitched into the seat head restraints. We’ve also used it for the big badge on the front grille and for the wheel centers.
How did the Finished Product Turn Out?
The car is simply a piece of art. It truly is the reality of the dream I had when I first saw the XKR-S, but I had no idea that I could make it my own. Jaguar accomplished it and I know it’s hard to believe, but this is the first NEW car I’ve ever bought; and let me tell you, it was sure worth the wait!
I only picked up my car last week at my local dealer, Jaguar Alpine, who do a great job here in Florida, but I’ve already put a few ripping miles on it. My mate at the dealership told me to keep the miles down, as eventually it’ll be worth a fortune. I told him, “Hold on a minute, I just paid a fortune for it,” and I don’t plan on giving it up anytime soon!
