"Champion freestyle skier and notorious petrolhead Jon spends upwards of 300 days out of every year with a set of skis as his luggage. Rather than risk putting them in the hold of a budget airline, or stuffing them into the boot of a beaten-up old rental car, he organises his own, unique transport. He gets about in an assortment of hot vehicles that have included an Audi R8, a Nissan GT-R, a Lamborghini Gallardo LP 540 and a Lamborghini Murcielago LP 670-4 SV, all of which have had enormous ski racks.

It should be noted that Jon also has an rather insane Ultima GTR, which doesn't have a roof rack, because its enormous rear wing could easily double as a snowboard.

Each of his cars has been modified quite heavily. The Audi R8, for example, has a full carbon fibre body kit from PPI Razor, which it 250Kg lighter than standard R8s. Its V10 engine has been fettled by Audi modding specialists Stasis, which fitted a supercharger so it now produces in the region of 800bhp. It'll do around 208mph, although we're not sure whether that's with or without the ski box on top.

If inclement weather conspires against the rear-wheel-drive R8, then Olssen's Lamborghini Murcielago LP 670-4 SV should prove a far more practical option. This sort of car can is most often found pounding tarmac-laden race circuits, but its four-wheel-drive system means it actually lends itself quite well to the piste. We've also seen Jon drive the same car through an enormous puddle as part of the Gumball 3000.

We're not sure we'd run the risk of ruining such expensive machinery by hooning around on snowy, salty mountain roads, but we've got to admire Olsson's audacity -- and his taste in cars. His vehicles are undeniably beautiful and his decision to add the ski boxes really adds considerably to to their overall appeal."

"In 1911 and 1912, T. Coleman du Pont was involved in building a road bearing his name through Delaware. As there was no road, there were no hotels, and he needed somewhere to stay.

It was described in period articles as being on a 1911 Stoddard-Dayton 45hp, 115-inch chassis, which doesn't really match up well with any 1910 or 1911 Stoddard-Dayton offerings. I’d guess it was the 112-inch wheelbase 2-ton truck, but you Stoddard-Dayton people can correct me. That was their shortest wheelbase for 1911, the ’30′ chassis was 114 inches; the ’40′ on 120 inches; and the ’50′ on 130 inches.

Maybe there were additional commercial models. The top was permanent (not removable), and held four vulcanized boxes underneath, along with specialized racks for maps and flat construction drawings.

Similarly, there were narrow, full-length lockers along each side of the rear compartment, which left room in between for a six-foot mattress. Eight more boxes around the car held tent hardware, stove, refrigerator (icebox), battery and so on. All were removable for modular packing and two of them were upholstered to serve as camp chairs. Two final boxes held extra oil, although whether for a stove or engine oil wasn’t specified.

The two big boxes on the running boards held the pair of side tents, sewn not from canvas but waterproof balloon silk; each was supported with three six-foot poles, stakes and guys. With the dropdown curtains on the canopy, it made three rooms when fully assembled. When in camp, electric lighting was courtesy of an extra 150-amp Edison battery, continuously charged by engine dynamo."

Guy Butcher and Eunice Kratky, recently traveled across and down the Americas by Austin 7, reached the end of the road in Punta Arenas (southern Chile) on March 25 2013. The car will be loaded up for the long boat ride home to the UK.
They have traveled some 18,300 road miles in the nearly eight months since landing at Baltimore MD. All under their own steam save for 100 miles or so hitch-hiking into Los Andes, Chile with two broken timing gears. (Photo: Hitchhiker). Aside from the timing gears and a failed rear wheel bearing, their mechanical troubles have been limited to numerous broken spokes, primarily in the heavily-laden rear wheels. What a great testament to the Mighty Austin 7 and Guy's obsessive attention to detail and preparation. (Photo: A7 Punta Arenas & Magellan Strait). Read more: http://www.bespk.com/
