"Attendees of the Washington Auto Show, which kicked off this week, will notice something strange among the shiny new machinery: a 50-year-old racing car with a nose that goes on forever. The 1964 Shelby Cobra Daytona Coupe with serial number CSX2287 is being honored as the first auto ever registered as a piece of national heritage at the Library of Congress. The U.S. Department of the Interior and the Historic Vehicle Association collaborated to record the car under standards for heritage documentation. Why this one? According to the HVA's Mark Gessler, the criteria included an association with important people (notably racing impresario Carroll Shelby, who died in 2012), important events (the Shelby team was the first from America to win the FIA GT world championship, in 1965, thanks in part to this car) and hand-built craftsmanship that has survived the decades."
