I've bought either a Haynes or Chilton's manual for every car I've owned and thereby saved myself countless dollars. These books are truly the pathway to automotive enlightenment.

if all else fails, google for the manufacturer's repair manual. I've found them for my fords at 900 pages plus, and they provide an overview of anything you could possibly imagine

Haynes and Chiltons have a tendency to differ slightly. As cheap as they are, I've gotten both and use them all the time.
