For $80, I can't tell you how worthwhile it is to own one of these if you've got a late model car. Most shops charge around $80 for a diagnosis.

If you find yourself with a 95 or older with the original OBD, have no fear there's still hope... If you find the sensor cables under the dash you can jump the circuit with a paper clip and a diagnosis code will flash on your dashboard. As long as you have the repair manual (or google), you should be all set to diagnose!

If you're a just weekend warrior mechanic and don't want to drop the full $80 on one of these, most parts stores will let you rent one for free. Some will even come out to the parking lot to show you how to use it if you look helpless enough.
