With its fine six cylinder engine, fully independent suspension and closed cabin, this 1949 Alfa Romeo 6C 2500 Super Sport promises its next owner fast and comfortable travels to Villa d’Este, Pebble Beach, and on the Mille Miglia. The 6C, after all, won the Mille Miglia in 1937 and the Villa d’Este concours in 1949. No small achievement in either case, and when combined with the car’s storied, Vittorio Jano-designed mechanicals makes for a car that is fast, beautiful, technologically advanced, and historically significant. This particular car is a rare and desirable Super Sport and therefor rides on a shorter 2,700mm wheelbase and has three Weber carburetors on its twin-cam, six-cylinder engine. Owned by a collector for 35 years the Alfa Romeo sits in solid, unrestored condition with most of the bodywork in a state of excellent structural soundness and retains almost all of its rare and expensive trim. On the mechanical side, the original engine was damaged and replaced at some point by another SS engine. The seller indicates that a second damaged engine is included in the sale, though there’s no indication whether this is the original. Photos show the 6C to be in need of a complete restoration with the bodywork in primer and very light surface corrosion on some of the steel surfaces. The good news with a project of this caliber, however, is that the expense of restoration will likely be recouped should the next owner sell. And if they keep the car as we would, they’ll be able to enter the events of their choosing. These are amazing and rare cars and we look forward to seeing it on a rally or concours field soon. For sale at Fantasy Junction.
